Ingredients

- A pinch of salt

- Optional: marshmallows, whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, or other toppings

Instructions

1. Place the water in a medium-sized saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

2. Add the masa harina and whisk constantly until dissolved. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes.

3. Add the cocoa powder, piloncillo, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon and salt. Whisk until all the ingredients are combined.

4. Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The champurrado should be thick and creamy.

5. Serve the champurrado in mugs or cups and top with marshmallows, whipped cream, cinnamon sticks, or other desired toppings.

Notes

If the champurrado is too thick, you can add a little more water until it reaches the desired consistency. The amount of piloncillo can be adjusted to taste. You can also add a spoonful of butter for an even richer flavor.
