Ingredients

For the cake:

-4 eggs

-1/2 cup sugar

-1/2 cup sugar

-1/2 cup water

-1 tablespoon cocoa powder

-1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pan and set aside.



2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs until light and fluffy. Gradually add the sugar and continue to beat until the mixture is thick and creamy.



3. In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and flour. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture and beat until just combined. Do not over mix.



4. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.



5. While the cake is baking, make the syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, water, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is thick and syrupy.



6. When the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of the cake and invert it onto a plate. Poke holes in the top of the cake with a fork and pour the syrup over the cake. Let the cake cool completely before serving.

Notes

This recipe can also be made in 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pan, but you may need to adjust the baking time. Be sure to check the cake at the 25-minute mark and add more time if needed.
