Ingredients

For the cake: 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, ¼ teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon salt, 1 cup cocoa powder, 1 cup butter, 2 cups granulated sugar, 4 eggs, 1 cup buttermilk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips.

For the chocolate ganache frosting: 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1 cup heavy cream, 1 tablespoon butter.

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans with butter and flour. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cocoa powder and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and mix until combined. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Slowly add the buttermilk and mix until just combined. Stir in the vanilla extract and chocolate chips.

3. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto cooling racks to cool completely.

4. To make the frosting, melt the chocolate chips in the microwave or over a double boiler. Add the cream and butter and mix until smooth. Allow to cool slightly before frosting the cooled cakes.
