Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda.

3. In a separate bowl, mix together the melted butter, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.

4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.

5. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

7. To make the frosting, beat the butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and milk, beating until smooth.

8. Place one layer of cake on a serving plate. Spread 1/3 of the frosting over the top. Top with the second layer of cake and repeat. Top with the third layer and spread the remaining frosting over the sides and top of the cake.

Notes

This cake can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
