Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk

For the ganache:

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips

For the glaze:

  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

To make the cake: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, orange zest, flour, baking powder, and salt. Add this dry mixture to the creamed butter and sugar, alternating with the milk. Beat until everything is well combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely before removing it from the pan.

To make the ganache: Place the chocolate chips in a medium bowl. In a small saucepan, heat the cream until it is just about to boil. Pour the cream over the chocolate chips and whisk until the ganache is smooth and creamy. Allow the ganache to cool for 10 minutes before pouring it over the cake.

To make the glaze: In a medium bowl, whisk together the orange juice and confectioners’ sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved. Pour the glaze over the top of the cake and spread it evenly.

Allow the cake to set for at least an hour before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

If you don’t have orange zest, you can substitute with 1 teaspoon of orange extract.

If you don’t have a 9-inch round cake pan, you can use an 8-inch square pan.
