Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted

For the Frosting:

  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

For the Ganache:

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For Decoration:

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the vanilla and mix to combine. With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk and beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined and then stir in the melted chocolate chips.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter in the bowl of an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and mix to combine. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar and mix until creamy.

To assemble the cake, place one layer on a cake plate. Top with 1/3 of the frosting and spread to the edges. Place the second layer on top and spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake.

To make the ganache, place the chocolate chips in a medium bowl. Heat the cream in a small saucepan over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Pour the cream over the chocolate chips and let sit for 5 minutes. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.

Pour the ganache over the top of the cake and let it drip down the sides. Sprinkle the top of the cake with the remaining chocolate chips. Let the ganache set before serving.

Notes

For best results, make sure your butter and cream cheese are at room temperature before beginning. If your cream cheese is too cold, it will be difficult to mix into the frosting.

If your ganache is too thick, you can add a little more cream to thin it out. If it’s too thin, you can add a little more chocolate.
