Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the ganache:
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

For decoration:
  • Powdered sugar, as desired
  • Chocolate chips, as desired

Instructions


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.


2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well with each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract.


3. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Stir in the chocolate chips.


4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool before frosting.


5. For the ganache, place the chocolate chips and cream in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the ganache is smooth. Spread the ganache over the cooled cake.


6. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and chocolate chips, as desired. Serve and enjoy!

This cake can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
