Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake:

Instructions

To make the Chocolate Cake:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  • Stir in the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk, mixing just until incorporated. Beat in the cocoa powder until combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto racks to cool completely.

To make the Cherry Filling:

Notes

This cake can be stored, covered, at room temperature for up to 3 days. If desired, you can also freeze the cake for up to 2 months. To thaw, place the cake in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
