Ingredients

To make these chocolate heart cookies, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, for decorating

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, cream together the butter and sugars until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and mix until combined. Slowly add the flour mixture, mixing until just combined. Add the melted chocolate and mix until combined.
  • Scoop the cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets, about 2 tablespoons per cookie. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow the cookies to cool for 3-5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Once the cookies are cooled, place the remaining chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute, stirring every 30 seconds, until the chips are melted. Using a spoon, drizzle the melted chocolate onto the cookies. Allow the chocolate to set before serving.

Notes

For a more intense chocolate flavor, increase the amount of semi-sweet chocolate chips to 1 cup and decrease the amount of all-purpose flour to 1 1/2 cups. You can also use dark or white chocolate chips in place of the semi-sweet chocolate chips. If you don’t have a microwave, you can melt the chocolate chips in a double boiler.
